Message from the Director
Dr. Akira Mikami, Director of Akira International Clinic
Since my early days as a medical intern, I have upheld the principle of “Patient First.”
It has been my unwavering belief that the kind of care I would want for myself should be the standard I offer to every patient.
This foundational philosophy has guided every decision I make in medicine, and I trust that staying true to it will keep me aligned with what is right.
Following my initial training, I dedicated myself to the field of emergency and critical care medicine at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo. There, I was fortunate to learn from inspiring mentors and compassionate colleagues.
The spirit of hospitality and the pursuit of lifelong learning that I cultivated during those years continues to form the bedrock of my practice today.
Two guiding principles I carry with me are: “Emergency medicine is the ultimate form of chronic care” — meaning that true care must extend beyond the immediate crisis to a patient’s long-term future — and “There is no sustainable medicine without sound management.”
The reason I chose to open my clinic in Nishi-Azabu is deeply personal. It is where many of the patients I have had the honour to care for over the years reside.
When I reflected on why I chose to practice here in the first place, what immediately came to mind were the faces of my patients.
The relationships I have built with individuals and families in this community are irreplaceable.
Everyday moments, like being greeted while walking through the neighbourhood, or hearing from a child who was inspired to study medicine because of our conversations — these have made me realize the true weight of responsibility that comes with being a physician in this area.
It is with that sense of duty that I decided to step beyond existing institutions and take the helm of my own practice.
I believe that in order to provide care that is both rooted in the community and sustainable in the long term, I must lead not just clinically but also in the management of the clinic itself.
The name “Akira International Clinic” reflects a firm commitment to openness and inclusivity — a place where anyone, regardless of nationality, gender, or age, can feel safe and welcome.
Drawing from my experience in emergency medicine, I am devoted to supporting the health and well-being of our community here in Nishi-Azabu for many years to come.
Thank you for your trust and support.
